Calix Innovation Awards: Delivering Services in Extreme Conditions
In the last installment of the 2011 Calix Innovation Award videos, we stay in Northern California and visit with Volcano Communications. Based in Pine Grove, a town located in the heart of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Volcano serves customers from 2,500 feet in elevation to just under 10,000 feet at the Kirkwood Resort.
With these high elevations come extreme weather conditions, including intense snow storms in the winter season, which causes a powering challenge for the team at Volcano. Last winter, some parts of the Volcano serving area lost power for a combined 30 days. By developing an unique network architecture with Calix C- and E-series platforms deployed in a variety of locations, line powering and microwave radios, Volcano has found a way to keep phone and broadband services up and running for its customers, no matter what the weather may bring.
Throughout 2012, we will be looking for more Calix customers to showcase throughout the year and at the 2012 Calix User Group Conference. If you would like to be considered for a future video, please let us know.
